CELPIP preparation FAQ
What is CELPIP and who needs it?
CELPIP is a computer-delivered English test accepted by IRCC for Canadian permanent residence and citizenship. CELPIP-General covers all four skills and is used for PR; CELPIP-General LS covers only Listening and Speaking and is used for citizenship.
CELPIP or IELTS — which is easier to score in?
Neither is officially easier. CELPIP is fully computer-based, uses Canadian English and everyday scenarios, and marks Speaking from a recording rather than a live interview. If you are comfortable typing and prefer North American contexts, most people find CELPIP the more predictable of the two.
What band do I need for PR or citizenship?
For Express Entry, CLB 7 across all four skills is the usual minimum, CLB 9 is the minimum you need to start boosting your CRS score, and CLB 10 is where the language points peak. For citizenship, CELPIP-General LS Level 4 in Listening and Speaking is the bar. Requirements are set by the program and change — confirm yours on the official IRCC website.
How long does preparation take?
It depends on your starting level and target. A candidate one band below target who practises consistently and joins a cohort typically needs four to eight weeks. Take a mock test first so the plan is built around a real baseline.
How does the marking work? Who marks my writing?
